Brown spots, freckles and melasma can be treated with a variety of treatments. Brown flat lesions with a clearly defined edge commonly arise at middle age and result from sun damage. They are most often found on the face and hands, and are larger and more defined than freckles. Melasma is hyperpigmentation of the skin that occurs mainly on the face. The affected area looks like dark, discoloured patches and is most often related to hormonal changes in the body like pregnancy and menopause. The condition is referred to as the pregnancy mask. Unfortunately after pregnancy and other hormonal changes melasma can remain and can become worse from sun exposure. At a glance the darker patches of skin can be mistaken for sun damage but it’s not the same, in fact some treatments used for sun damage can actually make the condition worse. With our resurfacing techniques, there is minimal discomfort and very little down-time.
